POWER OF CONCENTRATION

Baba (our Heavenly Father) has referred to the power of concentration as a magical power (for Siddhi results).  You can achieve big results with concentration.  The difference between a good yogi and a not so good yogi is made by the emphasis on 'concentration and accuracy'.

We all have the power of concentration; the more we use it, the more it increases.  The opposite of concentration is when our attention is scattered.  Attention is scattered, when there are too many attachments.  The fewer attachments, better the concentration.

Imagine a person is listening to a talk.  He knows his precious camera is in the car, his children are with friends, his cat is with the neighbour: (and his customers are expecting a reply.  He is attached to all of these things, so part of his attention will be drawn towards these different things.  As a result, he becomes inefficient at taking benefit from the talk.  Nor can he help his cat or camera or client, whilst at the talk.  He loses on all fronts.

A person who has learned to remain detached whilst being in this world is not in an emotional tangle about the job, cat, children or camera though he loves them all.  So, when he is with the children, he is able to apply himself fully.  At that time he is not thinking of the cat and so he can take clear decisions in the interests of the children.  When he is at work, he can concentrate fully, grasp the situation clearly and make wise decisions.  When he is at the talk, he applies himself fully to the subject of the talk.  At that time he is not distracted by the job or the children.  As a result, the talk becomes not just information but also an experience.  He gets maximum benefit for the time invested.  He wins on all fronts.  He can do every job efficiently.

Concentration is important and precious for everyone.  Students need concentration, drivers need concentration, a sports person needs concentration in order to score.

As students of meditation, we rely on concentration.   Concentration enables us to grasp the higher concepts.  The ideas become experiences.  It is through concentration that we are able to understand the subtle and experience the abstract entities. These experiences lead to clarity.  That, in turn, reinforces conviction and improves concentration further.  It is through concentration that we can experience God and experience truth.
